'Turtles All the Way Down' will mark his first new novel in nearly six years

Nerdfighters rejoice! Best-selling author John Green has announced that he will publish a new novel this October.

Scheduled to release on Oct. 10, Turtles All the Way Down is the story of 16-year-old Aza Holmes, a young woman who grapples with mental illness while investigating the disappearance of a fugitive billionaire. Publisher Dutton Books, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers, describes the book as being “about lifelong friendship, the intimacy of an unexpected reunion, Star Wars fan fiction, and tuatara. But at its heart is Aza Holmes, a young woman navigating daily existence within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.”

“I’ve been working on Turtles All the Way Down for years, and I’m so excited to share it with readers this October,” Green said in a statement. “This is my first attempt to write directly about the kind of mental illness that has affected my life since childhood, so while the story is fictional, it is also quite personal.”

The author also confirmed the publication date on his Twitter page, writing simply, “Turtles All the Way Down. October 10th 2017.”

Green looks to be returning to well-trod territory that he’s covered in previous best-sellers The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns, and Looking For Alaska. He’s garnered massive popularity among young fans with his unflinching and funny examinations of adolescence, often knit up with questions of love, tragedy, and illness, and all sprinkled with nerdy references and deep dives into various fan cultures. Green is himself the subject of a robust fan community for his books and his YouTube Series, The Vlogbrothers, which he hosts with his brother, Hank.

Two of his novels were adapted for the big screen: 2014’s The Fault in Our Stars with Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley and 2015’s Paper Towns with Nat Woolf and Cara Delevingne. Turtles All the Way Down comes nearly six years after the release of Green’s last book and international phenomenon The Fault in Our Stars in 2012.

Julie Strauss-Gabel, president and publisher of Green’s longtime publisher, Dutton Books for Young Readers, stated, “As with all of John’s work, Turtles All the Way Down is both a singularly personal read and a catalyst for conversation and community. It is with tremendous pride and great excitement that his longtime Penguin family can finally shout this news to the world.”
