John le Carré, the legendary author of The Spy Who Came in From the Cold and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, is bringing his beloved character George Smiley back to bookshelves for the first time in 25 years in a new novel.

According to a release, A Legacy of Spies follows Smiley’s colleague Peter Guillam as his relaxing days of retirement in Brittany are interrupted by a letter from the British Secret Service, summoning him to London. As it turns out, a new generation of Service members—people with no memory of the Cold War—will be scrutinizing Guillam and his peers’ (Alec Leamas, Jim Prideaux, and Smiley) operations from those days, and they don’t seem open to the old guard’s justifications.

A Legacy of Spies will be published by Viking on September 5, 2017.
