Schitt's Creek star Eugene Levy wins his first Emmy in 37 years
There's nothing Schitt-y about this.
Almost 40 years after his last Emmy win, Eugene Levy is once again taking home a trophy. During Sunday's virtual broadcast, the Schitt's Creek star and co-creator was named Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
"You see, I told you I was good," Levy joked from the Schitt's Creek party in Toronto during Sunday's broadcast. "I guess it's kind of ironical that the straightest role I've ever played lands me an Emmy for a comedy performance. So I now seriously need to question just what I've been doing for the past 50 years."
Levy's win came sandwiched between victories for his Schitt's Creek wife, Catherine O'Hara ("who evidently can make anyone she works with look good"), and his son, costar, and co-creator, Daniel Levy.
"As a dad, getting to work on camera for six years with both my kids, Daniel and Sarah, is such a joy and I couldn't be prouder," he said. "And that brings me to my multi-Emmy-nominated partner, Daniel Levy, who took our show that we came up with and brilliantly guided it to this little Emmy party tonight, so thank you, son."
The 73-year-old comedy legend was also nominated last year for starring as video-rental-mogul-turned-motel-owner Johnny Rose, but Sunday's Emmy win was his first since he went back-to-back in 1982 and 1983 for his writing work on the Canadian sketch series SCTV Network (which also starred O'Hara). Levy could go two-for-two at the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards, as Schitt's Creek is still up for Outstanding Comedy Series.
"It obviously feels very Schitt's Creek to get a bunch of award recognitions and not be able to actually go to the awards," Daniel Levy told EW upon their underdog series earning 17 nominations. Added O'Hara of her reaction to the Schitt's love: "I texted Daniel and Eugene right away, and then Eugene called and we had just a delightful happy conversation about how he's so happy for Daniel, of course. He's such a loving father, and a proud father, rightfully so."
