Director Pawel Pawlikowski isn’t necessarily known for happy go-lucky films: He’s directed the agonizing romance My Summer of Love, starring Emily Blunt, and Ida, a drama about a soon-to-be nun who finds out her Jewish parents were murdered during World War II.

Pawlikowski’s latest movie, Cold War — nominated for three Oscars, including Best Director — falls into what the filmmaker is best known for. The sweeping, sad, and volatile romance between a music director, Wiktor (Tomasz Kot), and a young singer, Zula (Joanna Kulig), spans a decade and shows off what Pawlikowski is great at. With Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film, the black-and-white drama is being rightfully recognized for its artistry, and for destroying audience’s hearts.

The director recently sat down for The Awardist to talk about Cold War and its nominations, and he has a delightful sense of humor about the types of films he’s drawn to directing. Watch the video above for more.
