Viggo Mortensen stars in Captain Fantastic as principled father named Ben, who’s raising his six kids off the grid and teaching them how to hunt and harvest their own food, analyze political theory, and generally rebel against traditional ideals. So it’s only fitting that the cast celebrated their SAG Award nomination for best ensemble by sticking it to the man.
After walking the red carpet, Mortensen, his costars, and writer-director Matt Ross (who plays Gavin Belson on Silicon Valley) stopped to pose for photographers with their middle fingers in the air. In addition to the six young actors who star as Ben’s kids — Samantha Isler, Shree Crooks, Nicholas Hamilton, Charlie Shotwell, George MacKay, and Annalise Basso — they were joined by Trin Miller, who plays Ben’s wife, and Jessica Jones star Erin Moriarty, who plays a teenage girl the family encounters on a road trip.
This isn’t the first time the cast has flipped the bird on the red carpet: They did the same thing at the Cannes Film Festival. In December, Mortensen spoke to EW about how much fun he’s had bonding with his young costars and how much they’ve enjoyed all the press attention.
“I remember walking up the red carpet in Cannes back in May, where we got this incredible reception from the audience, and the youngest kids were saying, ‘This is great! I like this red carpet stuff. We get all these standing ovations, and this is so cool. I’m coming back next year!’” Mortensen recalled, laughing. “And I said, well, you may not get invited next year. You have to get a movie that gets invited to Cannes, and even if you do, it’s very rarely you get people standing for 10 minutes after your movie, clapping and clapping. So just be really happy. It may never happen again.”
“And the youngest ones were like, ‘Oh, it will,’” Mortensen continues. “And I’m like, ‘Well, positive thinking is great.’”
Mortensen is also nominated for best actor in a feature film. See the full list of this year’s SAG Award winners here.
