Is the way one deals with the aftermath of war merely a matter of temperament? That's what this epic suggests. Three Montana brothers — Tristan (Brad Pitt, shown), Alfred (Aidan Quinn), and Samuel (Henry Thomas) enlist to fight in World War I. Tristan and Alfred watch in horror as Samuel is killed on the battlefield. The brooding Tristan tries to run from his grief, wandering around the globe on a years-long quest for self-annihilation, while the stolid Alfred returns home, marries the woman all three brothers loved (Julia Ormond), and becomes a rising politician. For both men, however, character is destiny, and neither is ever very far from tragedy and violence.

WILL FERRELL Superstar (1999) WHAT IT IS A critically reviled comedy starring SNL alum Molly Shannon as geeky Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine, in which Ferrell plays dual roles: Sky Corrigan, her unattainable love interest, and a laid-back, advice-offering son of God (pictured). FINAL JUDGMENT A 2005 slump seemed to be a sign of God's delayed wrath over Ferrell's jokey Jesus, but a varied career in film and TV has kept the funnyman walking in the light.

You'd think this would be a slam-dunk for Skywalker (shown here the way we first saw him, as a Tatooine farmboy in Episode IV), the Jedi who rescued Princess Leia, destroyed the Death Star, and brought Darth Vader back from the dark side of the Force. In fact, while Luke drew 37 percent of the vote, many of you also wanted to give props to Han Solo (23 percent) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (19 percent). Other major characters, including Yoda, R2-D2, and Leia, got handfuls of votes, proving that there's plenty of heroism to go around in this saga.

The Cable Guy (1996) This underrated, very dark comedy is about a cable customer (Matthew Broderick) harassed by a friendless technician (Jim Carrey) who seems to have bubbled up from the very id of television itself. Sorta like child-of-pop-culture Stiller, who famously grew up in a caustic showbiz household as the son of comics Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. Zoolander (2001) Stiller directed and starred in this classic satire of the fashion world, playing a vacuous model-turned-Manchurian Candidate-style unwitting assassin. Bonus points for naming its villain, Mugatu (Will Ferrell), after an old Star Trek monster. Tropic Thunder (2008) It took 20 years for Stiller to turn his failed Platoon audition into this merciless satire about pampered Hollywood actors (Stiller, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr.) whose Vietnam War epic goes violently awry.
