Chance the Rapper returned to Saturday Night Live for the second time this weekend, this time performing “Finish Line/Drown” and “Same Drugs” off Coloring Book.
The Chicagoan joyfully danced around the stage in red overalls while he rapped “Finish Line/Drown” before Noname came out to belt a verse. He also added some Christmas-themed lyrics: “Jesus, it’s your birthday,” he repeated throughout the song, “happy birthday, Jesus.”
Later, Chance sat at a white Yamaha to play “Same Drugs” with the help of a backing choir and string section. Francis and the Lights — who’s featured on Coloring Book track “Summer Friends” — came out to take over the piano for the powerful, sweeping outro, which concluded with fake snow falling from above.
This SNL appearance is just one part of what’s been a big month for Chance: In early December, he nabbed seven Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist and Best Rap Album.
“Glory be to God,” he tweeted in response to the news. “I’m nominated for 7 #grammys. Thank you to everyone who worked on Coloring Book, I love you.”
In addition to performing two songs at Studio 8H, Chance also starred in the pre-taped “Jingle Barack” short, a parody of Run-DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis” video from the late ’80s, alongside Kenan Thompson and host Casey Affleck.
