Rogue One: Inside the making of new U-wing starship
The Star Wars universe is filled with X-wings, Y-wings, A-wings, and more, but Rogue One adds another letter of the alphabet to the Rebel fleet.
Ahead of Rogue One’s Friday release, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about the new Rebel U-wing fighters in the video above. Director Gareth Edwards wanted to expand the world of Star Wars vehicles with this latest installment, but because Rogue One takes place immediately before the events of the 1977 original, all the new designs had to hew closely to the starships we know and love.
As a result, the Rebel U-wing was born, a starfighter capable of carrying multiple passengers (unlike the well-known X-wing style, which really only has room for its pilot in the cockpit). The U-wing is the ship we see Captain Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna) piloting in Rogue One, alongside his security droid companion K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) and the rebellious Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones).
See the U-wing in action in the video above, and head here for even more details on how the Rogue One designers incorporate elements of classic starfighters into the U-wing design.
