The 'This Is Us' star is nominated for supporting actress in a TV series
Mandy Moore is a Golden Globe nominee and can hardly believe it.
“That’s so bizarre to hear,” Mandy Moore told EW Monday morning after being referred to by that new title. During the nominations ceremony just an hour beforehand, the This Is Us star landed in the final five for best supporting actress in a series, limited series, or motion picture made for television for her work on the hit NBC show.
She was awake when her named was called, but not because of the announcement. “My boyfriend [Dawes lead singer Taylor Goldsmith] was getting ready to go to the airport so he was up around 5:15 and I just woke up with him and my phone lit up shortly thereafter. I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, the Golden Globe nominations,’ but I certainly was not expecting to be recognized for the show,” she said. “Milo [Ventimiglia] was actually the one who texted me and was like, ‘Congratulations, Mandy!’ I was like, ‘Wait, on what? The show got nominated?’ He’s like, ‘No, you did!’
“My jaw was definitely on the ground and I just started shaking. I’ve never been nominated for anything in my life. I feel like I’m on another planet right now. It’s so exciting, but I’m most excited about the show getting nominated.”
One of her first calls was one to her father that she felt a bit guilty about afterward. “I called my poor dad at 5:30 in the morning and woke him up,” she said. “He’s like, ‘Is everything OK?’ I’m like, ‘Dad, it’s fine. I got nominated for a Golden Globe!’ He’s like, ‘Oh, congratulations.’ I could tell I totally woke him up from a dead sleep, so I was like, ‘Go back to bed. We’ll talk about it later. Sorry, I shouldn’t have called you, that was dumb.’ That definitely could’ve waited a couple hours.”
Moore is up against Olivia Colman from The Night Manager, Lena Headey from Game of Thrones, Thandie Newton from Westworld, and her own costar, Chrissy Metz.
“It’s not competition,” Moore said. “Chrissy Metz is just on another level. She is an exceptional woman and actress and her heart and her humor. I’m thrilled to be able to share this little journey with her for the next couple weeks and we get to go through it together.”
She’s also excited to get to attend another awards show with her castmates: “I just want to have the opportunity to go hang out at an awards show with everybody again, because we were just at the Critics’ Choice together last night and it was so much fun. It’s such a good group and we don’t get to hang out as a group together as much as we would all like.”
The 74th annual Golden Globe Awards, hosted by Jimmy Fallon, will be doled out Jan. 8 on NBC.
