Furiosa fractures 'Fast' family, forcing fantastic feats of fiery fun.
It’s been 10 million years since 2015’s Furious Seven, the greatest movie ever made about a car crashing through one building in order to crash through another building. When last we saw Dominic Toretto and his merry band of vehicular warriors, they were saying a tender farewell to Brian and Mia, their characters “retiring” in the wake of franchise mainstay Paul Walker’s tragic death in 2013. Now the Furious franchise is entering a new era – and facing off against some new forces.
In The Fate of the Furious, Charlize Theron plays Cipher, a mysterious woman who brings Dom into a new world of global car-adjacent crime. Somehow, the gang finds it way to Cuba, and to New York, and to the land of the White Walkers slash the Arctic Ocean. After teasing the film throughout the week, the trailer for the eighth Fast & Furious film finally arrived on Sunday night.
The cast and crew took over Times Square, hijacking more than 50 billboards for the trailer drop. Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, and director F. Gary Gray united to tease the trailer, and although they presented a united front and spoke at length about the Fast family, the trailer offered a very different story.
The first footage from the film kicks off with business as usual, with Dom and the gang pulling off an explosive job, but it doesn’t take long for things to shift. To everyone’s horror, Dom turns on them and teams up with Cipher, who growls, “Did you ever think you’d betray your family the way you did today?”
Watch the trailer below, and pray that April 14 comes quick.
