On Thursday, Yoko Ono paid tribute to her late husband John Lennon on the 36th anniversary of his death by posting a plea for gun control in the U.S.

“We are turning this beautiful country into a War Zone,” Ono wrote in the Facebook post. “Together, let’s bring back America, the green land of Peace.”

In a statement posted to her website, IMAGINE PEACE, Ono briefly cited gun violence statistics in the U.S. since her husband’s death.

“Over 1,200,000 people have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. since John Lennon was shot and killed on December 8th, 1980,” the statement reads.

Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman as he an Ono were entering their Manhattan apartment building on Dec. 8, 1980. See Ono’s full post below.
