Johnny Depp leads Forbes list of most overpaid Hollywood actors (again)
Johnny Depp has earned one of Hollywood’s least-wanted honors — for the second year in a row.
Once again, Depp has topped Forbes’ annual list of the most overpaid actors in Hollywood, with his last three movies earning just $2.80 for every $1 he was paid. Still, that’s an improvement over last year, when his movies only earned $1.20 for every dollar.
Forbes looked at the last three films each actor starred in before June 2016, excluding cameos, animated films, and films that were released on fewer than 2,000 screens. The resulting list includes leading men like Will Smith ($5/$1), Channing Tatum ($6/$1), Will Ferrell ($6.50/$1), and George Clooney ($6.70/$1). The only woman to make the top 10 is Julia Roberts, who came in ninth with $10.80 for every dollar, thanks to Mother’s Day and Money Monster.
Earlier this year, Depp reprised his role as the Mad Hatter in the underperforming Alice Through the Looking Glass, which only earned $77.1 million domestically compared to the original Alice in Wonderland’s $334.2 million domestic total. For next year’s list, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them probably won’t boost his ranking, since that was just a cameo, but he may have better luck playing Captain Jack Sparrow again in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (out May 26, 2017).
