'Phantasm' Christmas tree sphere ornament: Exclusive first look
The flying metal spheres featured in the long-running Phantasm horror film franchise are brain-sucking agents of death — but they also kind of look like something you might hang on a Christmas tree. This resemblance has been noted by the folks at collectible film merch company Mondo which, EW can exclusively announce, is releasing the Sentinel Sphere Replica Ornament.
“Introduced in the 1979 horror classic Phantasm, the sentinel sphere is the signature weapon of supernatural undertaker The Tall Man,” the copy on the ornament’s box says. “The flying silver orb is used to drill into the brain of his victims and drain their head-nog. Mondo, in collaboration with legendary filmmaker Don Coscarelli and Middle of Beyond, presents the Sentinel Sphere Replica Ornament. The perfect addition to your holiday horror decor!”
This reveal arrives on the same that day that both the original Phantasm and this year’s Phantasm: Ravager make their debuts on Blu-ray. The former is available in its new Phantasm: Remastered version, a 4K restoration overseen by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot company. Phantasm: Ravager, meanwhile, boasts a commentary with Coscarelli and director David Hartman along with behind-the-scenes footage, deleted scenes, bloopers, and a trailer. It also features the last Phantasm appearance by actor Angus Scrimm, who played the Tall Man and died this past January. Both Phantasm: Remastered and Phantasm: Ravager are also available to buy on DVD.
The Sentinel Sphere Replica Ornament is available to pre-order at the official Mondo website. See images of the ornament below, as well as the trailers for Phantasm: Remastered and Phantasm: Ravager.
