Newly minted Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel is already showing off some of his Donald Trump material.
Discussing the news that he will host the 2017 Academy Awards, Kimmel joked that he had received a congratulations call from the President of Taiwan. “Just to be clear: she called me, not the other way around,” Kimmel said, referencing the president-elect. Last week, Trump said he received a call from the Taiwanese president, a conversation that broke with decades of diplomatic conventions between the U.S. and China.
Kimmel, who hosted the Emmys this year, tapes Jimmy Kimmel Live across the street from the Kodak Theatre where the Oscars occur and joked that his proximity to the venue was part of the reason he scored the gig.
In a statement released Monday, producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd didn’t mention Kimmel’s location, but instead how his “ability to connect with people is what makes him a singular choice for this job.”
They added, “His frank observations, relatable persona, wry humor and love of all kinds of film make him a natural fit for the Oscars stage.”
In addition to commenting on the Oscars job, Kimmel also revealed that his wife is pregnant.
The Oscars air Feb. 26, 2017 on ABC. Watch Kimmel’s comments below.
