Game of Thrones, Star Wars top Twitter trending lists for 2016

A song of ice and fire and a galaxy far, far away continued to captivate social media users in 2016. According to Twitter’s newly released year-end stats, HBO’s sprawling fantasy series Game of Thrones was the top-trending TV show of the past 12 months, while Disney and Lucasfilm’s revitalized Star Wars saga ranked No. 1 among movies.

With its uncharted sixth season — the first to push beyond George R.R. Martin’s published books — Game of Thrones beat out AMC’s zombie thriller The Walking Dead and ABC’s medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

Powered by The Force Awakens and Rogue One, the Star Wars franchise eclipsed several superhero movies, including Warner Bros’. Suicide Squad (No. 2) and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (No. 5), Fox’s Deadpool (No. 3), and Disney and Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War (No. 6).

The Oscars topped the trending list for award shows, followed by the Grammys and the MTV Video Music Awards. And in the realm of musical artists, South Korean performers Exo and Jimin claimed the top two spots, followed by the late legend Prince.
