ANOHNI unveils video for 'Obama,' urges president to release Chelsea Manning
ANOHNI, former lead singer of Antony and the Johnsons, released the video for “Obama” off her debut solo album Hopelessness on Monday, and with it, penned an impassioned letter to the president urging him to release Chelsea Manning from prison.
Manning, who, like ANOHNI is transgender, was sentenced in 2013 to a 35-year maximum security prison sentence for being a Wikileaks whistleblower in 2010 during her time as a soldier in the Army.
“OBAMA, Please let Chelsea Manning out of prison,” ANOHNI wrote in the statement. “Recognize her tremendous sacrifice, and her vulnerability. With Trump incoming, if you leave Chelsea in prison, she will never see the light of day, or worse. If you leave Chelsea Manning in prison for whistle blowing you send the final message to our nation that the Obama administration brutally punished moral courage in these unforgiving United States. She has suffered enough, President Obama.”
