Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuts with Baby Groot, Star-Lord secret
The Galaxy gang is all here, plus a few extra-terrestrial faces.
Marvel released the second trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on Saturday, which director James Gunn unveiled at Comic Con Experience 2016 in São Paulo, Brazil. While the first teaser brought back the unlikely crew of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and a younger Groot, this new trailer uncovers more characters from the different corners of Marvel’s unending galaxy.
Right off the top we see the Abilisk, a gargantuan creature Gunn teased via concept art back in August. The oversized alien behemoth has enough teeth and tentacles to wipe out any hero attempting to take it down, and that’s exactly what we see Drax trying to do. Leave it to Rocket to pack explosives (hopefully) powerful enough to take on the threat, warning Baby Groot not press a button “because that will set off the bomb immediately and we’ll all be dead.”
Rocket has his paws full with the more adventurous and pint-sized tree creature we all know and love. Baby Groot, while adorable, has a penchant for danger, which means giving him a tiny nuclear bomb probably won’t end well.
Also see at the end of the trailer is Mantis, an alien acquaintance to the team (played by Pom Klementieff), who reveals Star-Lord’s “deepest, darkest secret” — a moment Drax finds hilarious. Sporting noticeable antennae on her head, it’s her personality that stands out most. “She has never really experienced social interaction,” said executive producer Jonathan Schwartz to EW. “Everything she learns about dealing with people, she learns from the Guardians of the Galaxy, which is a very weird group to learn your social intricacies from.” Boy, does it show.
Absent from the new trailer, set to British band Sweet’s “Fox on the Run,” is Ego (played by Kurt Russell), Star-Lord’s father. Not much was known about the absentee dad in the first go-around, and we’re still going to have to wait a bit longer to see where Peter Quill gets his suave and charm.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens May 2017.
