The 2017 Oscars race continues to take shape, and for visual effects, the race is down to 20 contenders.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences announced the shortlist of remaining films that are being considered for an Oscar nomination in the Best Visual Effects category. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (to be released on Dec. 16), Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Arrival have all made the cut.
Later this month, a committee will further whittle this list down to 10 films before the official Oscar nominations are announced on Tuesday, Jan. 24. Ex Machina won the statuette for Best VFX this past year.
