Lost in Space remake: Parker Posey joins Netflix series
Never fear, Parker Posey is here.
The Queen of Indies, perhaps best known for her roles in cult classics like House of Yes and Party Girl in addition to performances in Christopher Guest’s ensemble comedies Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration, and Mascots, will play the scheming Dr. Smith in the upcoming Netflix remake of the classic TV series Lost in Space.
Posey’s casting, first reported by Deadline, marks a notable gender swap for the character, who was originally portrayed as a man; the late Jonathan Harris starred as Dr. Smith in the original series while English actor Gary Oldman played the part in the show’s 1998 film adaptation.
Set for a 2018 premiere, the first season of Netflix’s 10-episode Lost in Space project serves as a new incarnation of Irwin Allen’s sci-fi drama, which originally aired 83 episodes between 1965 and 1968 on CBS. Prison Break’s Zack Estrin serves as the program’s showrunner, while Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold) will write the series. It revolves around the Robinson family, stranded off-course deep in space, ultimately forced to confront a mysterious alien environment and personal tensions that arise throughout their journey.
Posey joins a cast that already includes House of Cards vet Molly Parker as Maureen Robinson, Falling Skies‘ Taylor Russell as Judy Robinson, Black Sails actor Toby Stephens as John Robinson, and child star Max Jenkins — who played a younger version of Brian J. Smith’s character on Netflix’s Sense8 — as Will Robinson.
