Neal Shusterman, the National Book Award-winning author of Challenger Deep will release Scythe, the first book in a new trilogy, on Nov. 22 — and EW has an exclusive first look at the book’s trailer.

Scythe takes place in a world free of the swine flu and ebola scares of our current reality. Disease has been completely eradicated. Which sounds great, right? But there’s a little problem. Population growth must now be controlled by reapers called scythes, who “glean” (a.k.a. kill) people at random. In this new book, two teens, Citra and Rowan, are chosen as scythe’s apprentices (against both of their wills), but things get too complicated when it turns out their first task is to glean the other.

“After a decade of teen dystopia, I wanted to do something that flipped it upside down,” Shusterman told EW in February. “Rather than a tale of a dystopian world, I thought ‘What would be the consequences of a truly perfect world?’ A world without war, poverty, crime, or disease. A world where we’ve found solutions to all our problems, to the point of even conquering death Then I realized that once we stole death from nature, we would be obliged to be it’s sole distributor. I envisioned a world where a Jedi-like order — highly moral and ethical — was responsible for thinning the population.”
