A Series of Unfortunate Events (TV series)

The Baudelaire brood better brace themselves: Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris) is on the hunt for them, one unfortunate event at a time.

In the first official trailer for Netflix and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes), and baby Sunny (Presley Smith) are whisked away from their homes after their parents perish — that’s “killed,” FYI — in a fire. Their new guardian, Count Olaf, quickly tries to seize their fortune through a number of schemes: He makes them tackle a lengthy list of chores, threatens them with a faulty hourglass (he bought it online, OK?!), and uses disguises involving beards, wigs, and colorful costumes.

It’s funny — until you remember all this misfortune is very, very terrifying. “We are setting out on a very top secret expedition,” Uncle Monty (Aasif Mandvi) tells the children. “What do you say, Baudelaires? Are you in?”

Join them — and bring a harpoon gun if you have one! — when A Series of Unfortunate Events hits Netflix on Friday, Jan. 13. The series also stars Joan Cusack as Justice Strauss, Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket, Alfre Woodard as Aunt Josephine, and Catherine O’Hara as Dr. Orwell.
