John Mayer dropped his newest single “Love on the Weekend,” on Thursday, his first new release since a 2014 cover of “XO.” The song will be included on his forthcoming album, out next year.

The single is a guitar-based return to pop music for the singer-songwriter, who went in a more folksy direction for his last two albums, 2012’s Born and Raised, and 2013’s Paradise Valley.

Mayer first raised speculation of new music in October, when he tweeted, “Mixes and meetings and photo shoots and finishing touches. Pop Music I’m comin’ back…,” and officially confirmed the new single on Nov. 10 with Instagram and Twitter posts.

He premiered “Love on the Weekend” with a Facebook live session that also doubled as a Q&A with fans.
