Part of playing a doctor on TV is giving people terrible news with sincerity and sympathy. Boris Kodjoe, who plays Dr. Will Campbell on Code Black, knows that burden well.

When Kodjoe stopped by EW: The Show, he taught us how to deliver bad news like a TV doctor. But Kodjoe isn’t exactly sharing tragic diagnoses to make his points. “Mrs. McPhee, I’m sorry to have to be the one to say this, but your daughter was caught binge-watching Fueller House.”

It looks like the key to breaking the news convincingly is to tilt your head down slightly, but keep your eyes up and speak slowly like Kodjoe does with another hilarious example: “This will be difficult to hear, ma’am… but when you are out of the office… your co-worker Don does a pretty spot-on impression of you. So good in fact… that we won’t be needing your services anymore. You’re fired.”
