They’re very different instruments but 'together, they make a weirdly appealing sound'
Gilmore Girls fans spent several long years hoping for Luke and Lorelai to get together and finally, hundreds of cups of coffee later, they shared their first kiss in the season 4 finale.
Despite not having entirely similar dispositions, Lauren Graham ( the woman behind Lorelai Gilmore) feels the pair complemented one another. “If they were instruments in an orchestra, they’re very different instruments, but together they make a weirdly appealing sound,” she explains in the new episode of EW Reunites: Gilmore Girls on the PEOPLE/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN).
“She’d probably be first violin,” adds Scott Patterson who plays grumpy coffee shop owner Luke Danes. “Maybe oboe? I don’t know.”
Regardless of which spot they’d each fill in an orchestra, it was clear to fans from the the earliest episodes of the show that Lorelai and Luke highlighted different aspects of each other’s characters. “His gruffness brings out her, sort of, flirtatiousness,” says Graham. “There’s a chemistry there. Over time they really connect. They need each other as balance; she lightens him up and he roots her a little bit, but it took a while to get there.”
Luke and Lorelai shippers were all too aware of the time it took for the couple to get together. “Blame it on the writers,” jokes Danes, “because we wanted it right away.” Still, he admits he understood why playing the waiting game was the right approach to telling the love story. “If you have something that combustable, that incendiary, milk it, just drag it out as long as you can because that’s the soul of drama,” he concedes. “That kind of concentrated tension? You can stretch that out for a while and she [creator and executive producer Amy Sherman-Palladino] did.”
