The Trans List: Caitlyn Jenner, Laverne Cox talk transgender equality
Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox are just two of the many famous faces lending their perspective on life as transgender people to HBO’s upcoming documentary The Trans List, the first trailer for which was released Tuesday afternoon.
“What is this thing, ‘female?'” Jenner asks in the clip, questioning societally-coded ideas regarding gender. “It’s more than just hair and makeup.”
Cox adds: “We live in a world that tells so many people that they’re not enough. I’m here to tell you that you are.”
According to The Trans List‘s Facebook page, the documentary is a “riveting group portrait” of transgender faces throughout the LGBT community. It highlights prominent trans voices including Jenner, Cox, Janet Mock (who also produced the film and conducted the interviews contained within), Kylar Broadus, Caroline Cossey, Buck Angel, Nicole Maines, Amos Mac, Bamby Salcedo, Shane Ortega, Alok Vaid-Menon, and Miss Major Griffin-Gracy.
“Their stories extend beyond surface explanations of identity to deeper realities of politics and pleasure, telling captivating tales of love, desire, family, prejudice, and rebellion,” the synopsis reads. “From Cossey’s difficult days as an outed ‘James Bond Girl’ to Griffin-Gracy’s striking memories of the Stonewall Riots.”
The Trans List marks the continuation of director Timothy Greenfield-Sanders’ List series, debuting after his 2008 film The Black List, which featured 22 influential African-American cultural leaders, including Al Sharpton, Toni Morrison, and Colin Powell, and 2013’s The Out List, which profiled LGBT community leaders like Ellen DeGeneres, Dustin Lance Black, Neil Patrick Harris, Suze Orman, and Wanda Sykes.
The Trans List airs Monday, Dec. 5 on HBO. Watch the project’s first trailer below.
