The final trailer for Live by Night gives us a deeper look into the mind of Ben Affleck‘s gangster character… and some of his picturesque surroundings.

“Powerful men don’t have to be cruel. I got one guaranteed life. I was gonna live it. I had a plan,” Joe Coughlin (Affleck) says slowly and thoughtfully and beautiful images — even a dolphin! — flash on screen. But that calm, smooth chatter doesn’t last, and the trailer soon takes an action-packed turn full of car chases, gun shots, and dramatic violence. The clip closes with Elle Fanning shaking her head and saying, “We’re all going to hell.”

The film marks Affleck’s return as a writer-director after 2012’s Best Picture-winning Argo. Live By Night is a crime thriller set in Boston in the roaring ’20s and the world of gangster-run speakeasies. Coughlin, a gangster with a conscience, crosses the wrong mob boss and pays for it. He flees to Tampa’s rum-running underworld to plot revenge. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane. Live by Night also stars Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana, and Chris Cooper.

In November, EW premiered an exclusive image from the movie. “I love the gritty characters and the great dialogue and this role,” Affleck told us. “At the center of it is his journey, his internal struggle, and how he defines himself.”

The film comes out Jan 13, 2017.
