Pop songs are supposed to grab listeners, which puts a lot of importance on the opening lines. James Corden, though, decided to give those first lines with even more importance in his First Line, Every Line game, where contestants sing a pop song, but just the first lyric over and over. On Thursday night’s iteration, he recruited Hailee Steinfeld to play alongside him.

Steinfeld kicked things off with Katy Perry’s “Firework,” transforming the whole song into “do you ever feel like a plastic bag?” Then it was Corden’s turn, and he sang Adele’s “Someone Like You” with only “I heard that you settled down” over and over again. The two then joined forces for the final song, Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” — or as they sang it, “life is a mystery, life is a mystery, life is a mystery.”
