Thanks, Obama?

In Stephen Colbert’s view, Donald Trump’s run for president of the United States can be traced back to Barack Obama.

During his live Showtime special — titled Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night Democracy’s Series Finale: Who’s Going To Clean Up This S–t? — the Late Night host produced an animated clip detailing Trump’s path from Celebrity Apprentice host to the Republican nominee for president. It all began at the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. There, Obama made fun of the decisions Trump had to make on the NBC reality series. That didn’t sit with the stewing, animated Trump.

“Not funny, bigly not funny. I’ll get your birth certificate, Obama,” Trump thought to himself. “I’m not a loser, you’re a loser, and there’s nothing worse in this world than a loser!”

Five years later, Trump is drawing big rallies and on the campaign trail. Cut to Obama and Michelle Obama at home watching the rally. The current President had only three words: “Uh, my bad.”

Colbert opened his live special with the animated clip before jumping into a monologue. “This one is a nail-biter and a passport grabber. It feels like we’re trying to avoid the apocalypse, and half the country is voting for the asteroid,” he said.

When informed Trump was nearing the requisite 270 electoral votes, Colbert was stupefied. “I can’t put a happy face on that,” he said, “and that’s my job.”
