Meet Elwood Edwards, the voice behind the online service

While most people avoid talking to their Uber drivers, one rider in Ohio made an unexpected discovery: The man driving her car was none other than Elwood Edwards, better known as the voice behind the AOL’s “You’ve got mail” welcome.

As you can see in the video (below) which Brandee Barker posted on Twitter, Edwards not only confirms the news, but gives her (and viewers) a vocal demonstration.

Edwards, a voice actor, lent his voice to the now-familiar voice-automated greeting — and eventual movie title — that welcomed American AOL users in the early ’90s as they logged online to check their email, as well as complete a range of other tasks.
