Harry Potter yoga class swaps namaste for Order of the Phoenix
Yoga instructor Isabel Beltran put a little Wingardium Leviosa in her Halasana to create the perfect Harry Potter yoga class.
The Circle Brewing Company in Austin, Tex. is now home to the fantasy-inspired yoga class all about everyone’s favorite spell caster. Combining classic yoga poses with the iconic Harry Potter universe, Beltran created a unique 60-minute course that was born from the Halloween season, offering the first cross-over class on Oct. 30.
“We teach yoga every Sunday and we were trying to come up with something fun to do for Halloween,” Beltran tells EW. “I called my sister who works in PR and we decided to do something where we could combine all the things that we love.” Apart from her active lifestyle and passion for fitness, Beltran stresses the idea revolved around the fact that “we’re a bunch of geeks, too.”
Honoring the anniversary of Potter’s parents’ death, Beltran also infused her Mexican heritage’s celebration of Dia de los Muertos, “so it was a lot of magical ingredients that came into being.” Transitioning from the typical yoga structure to the Hogwarts witch and wizard archetype’s was a smooth one for Beltran, due to their similar approach to posing. “A lot of the wand poses are very similar to yoga in the sense that you have to concentrate and think of happy memories,” she says. “Yoga is very magical in that sense.”
Within the class itself, the pose names were changed to reflect the names of spells and creatures created by J.K. Rowling, including the tree pose as “Whomping Willow,” the Warrior 1, 2, 3 poses as “Wizard , 2, 3,” plank pose as “Nimbus 2000,” and the three-legged pose as “Fluffy.” “I would chant to the class, ‘Let’s do this, Dumbledore’s Army!’ and people seemed get a kick out of it.” Beltran also decided to end each class with a reading from the last installment in the franchise, Deathly Hollows, to “have everybody calm down and relax.”
As for the future of the class, Beltran has already received word from overseas for a lesson on how to perfect the art of wizard yoga. “I’ve been getting requests about coming to Ireland and Bali,” she says. “I’ve also seen a lot of yoga classes start to spread relating to the Harry Potter scene. I saw a fantasy event in Atlanta is planning on doing a Potter-inspired class.” With the upcoming spin-off prequel film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Beltran already has plans to create a custom class around the many fantastic creatures. “We’re going to use different quotes from the book and incorporate the different magical creatures into poses.”
Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper Harry Potter discussion without conjuring up the best Potter character yoga partner. “I would love to take it with, obviously, Harry, and also Luna Lovegood or Ginny because I think they’re very magical, and Hermione,” she says. “Actually, I would like to take a class with all of them.”
