Hint: 'The Crown' isn't Claire Foy's first twirl in period garb
Much like The Crown wasn’t television’s first telling of Queen Elizabeth II’s story, the new Netflix series wasn’t the first period drama for many of its actors. Stars Claire Foy and Ben Miles have a handful of such credits on their respective resumes.
It seems some actors dominate the genre — nearly every third role in their credits is in a lavish costume drama. Many of the stars of Downton Abbey, The Tudors, and more have played several real life historical figures and heroes and heroines from literature on the small screen. Of course, it helps if you’re British, as many period pieces require English accents and the BBC is one of the powerhouses of genre.
With recognizable names like Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Maggie Smith among them, how well do you know the careers of these kings and queens of costume drama on TV? Test your knowledge below, by picking out which series each of these beloved actors has not appeared in. Good luck!
(Please note: some titles on this list have multiple remakes and adaptations. In that case, we’re asking if the actor in question has been in any of them.)
