Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon get their moment in Sing trailer
- Movie
Imagine American Idol, but instead of Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood, there’s a pig, gorilla, porcupine, and elephant, all trying to live out their dream. That’s Sing.
The new trailer for the animated musical comedy, written and directed by Garth Jennings, finds its animal characters struggling to chase their singing aspirations, while perfectly paired with Eminem’s “Sing for the Moment,” which samples Aerosmith’s “Dream On.”
“Don’t let fear stop you from doing the thing you love,” says Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), a koala struggling to keep his theater alive, prompting him to hold a singing contest to raise the money he needs.
Hundreds of animals come out to pursue their dreams, including Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), a mother of 25 piglets; Johnny (Taron Egerton), a gorilla trying to avoid a life of crime; Ash (Scarlett Johansson), a recently cheated-on porcupine; and Meena (Tori Kelly), a shy teenage elephant.
Featuring a soundtrack of over 65 covers, with music as diverse as the Beatles to Kanye West, Jennings previously told EW why it was so important to find the right actors.
“It was so nice to know that the voice cast wasn’t going to step aside and have someone else come in and sing the songs for them, that they would be invested with a character all the way through,” he said. “And although that was a challenge, it was exactly the right challenge to have for everyone, and they were all marvelous. Recording pop songs with people like Scarlett and Reese is about as good as it gets.”
Sing hails from Illumination Entertainment, the company behind the Despicable Me franchise and The Secret Life of Pets. The movie will, well, sing its way into theaters on Dec. 21.
