Viewers weren’t the only ones taken by surprise with American Horror Story: Roanoke’s latest twist. As it so happens, so was series star, Kathy Bates.
“I didn’t know about the twist until that was going to happen,” the actress shared at EW PopFest last weekend. “All I knew was that this is a juicy role.”
The latest season — which started as a show within the show documenting, via reenactments, the menacing hauntings at a centuries-old ghost colony in North Carolina — changed course mid-season, switching to a “reality” format, convening the “real” people who lived in that house with the actors who portrayed them on the fictional docuseries. The cast of characters are already falling victim to the hauntings — and each other. And there’s still more to go.
Series costar Evan Peters says the actors learn what’s going to happen to their characters on Ryan Murphy’s FX anthology series on a “script by script” basis.
“They give me a vague idea of what I could be playing, but that could change at any minute,” explained the actor about his experience on the seasons he’s been a part of. “They give me a script and they say go. And I wonder what’s going to happen to him.”
