Pretty Little Liars: Shay Mitchell posts farewell letter video
Pretty Little Liars withdrawal is real, folks.
After all of last week’s emotional Instagram posts and matching tattoos as the Freeform series wrapped its seventh and final season, the cast is still feeling grief saying goodbye can bring. Shay Mitchell, who plays Emily Fields on the long-running series, posted her “Farewell Letter” to YouTube Tuesday.
And we’re totally choked up just watching the first few frames, which sees the cast and crew applauding as the final take is completed at 12:15 a.m. and Lucy Hale and Ashley Benson clearly trying to hold back tears.
Seconds later, the video cuts to Mitchell’s tear-stained face, presumably in her dressing room, at 12:38 a.m. “Sad, anxious, excited, terrified, inspired, gratified, nervous, unsure, proud, upset, accomplished, relieved, devastated, lucky: I didn’t know it was possible to feel so much at once, yet I sit here with all my feelings,” she says. “It feels like the last day of school with just an extra bit of emptiness.”
She continues: “Our show ending is such a weird, unique thing that I have only experienced from where you all are sitting: the viewer’s side. I remember shows I watched growing up ending and all that came along with a series finale, yet where I am seated now is so different. I don’t know what my life would’ve looked like without Pretty Little Liars.”
Through her tears, she goes on to recall shooting the pilot seven years ago, maturing with her castmates, and seeing the crew members’ kids grow up.
After lamenting forgetting to bring tissues while she filmed her letter, Mitchell honors her “sisters” on the show, and talks about what she hopes for their characters after the cameras stopped rolling.
“I’d like to think that somewhere in an alternate Rosewood universe, that these five women will always remain a constant in each others’ lives, just as I hope we all do in our own reality.”
We’re crying too hard now — you’ll have to watch the rest of the video, above, yourself. The final episodes of Pretty Little Liars begin airing on Freeform in April.
Four little liars and a being named “A” (who may or may not be the fifth little liar) try to live their lives in Rosewood. It’s complicated.
