Lauryn Hill provided a powerful performance of her newly reworked “Rebel/I Find It Hard to Say (Version).”

The musician appeared on PBS’ Charlie Rose Friday with her band to give a live rendition of the redone song. The original track titled “Rebel,” which first appeared in 2002 on the album MTV Unplugged No. 2.0, was written at the time in memory of Amadou Diallo, an unarmed black man who was fatally shot by New York City police officers in 1999. The 23-year-old was an immigrant from Guinea living in the city.

Hill debuted the revival version of the song last week at the TIDAL X: 1015 event at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. After sharing the track, Hill tweeted about the re-release. “Old tune, new Version, same context, even more relevant now,” she wrote. “Sick and tired of being sick and tired.”
