This is not a love story for the ages. The new Nocturnal Animals trailer shows how love turns to hate and then becomes a psychological hellscape for Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal.

After directing 2009’s A Single Man, starring Colin Firth, Tom Ford returns with a story adapted from Austin Wright’s 1993 novel Tony and Susan. The trailer begins in typical fashion with boy meets girl: first crushes Edward (Gyllenhaal) and Susan (Adams) cross paths years later and spark a romance that leads to marriage. But something horrible happens that destroys the relationship.

Now settled with a new husband, Susan receives a book in the mail penned by Edward, and she sees it as a veiled threat against her. The film weaves between what’s happening in the book and what’s happening with Susan, and that’s where the footage throws you off guard with a bevy of vengeance-fueled characters popping in and out of the picture.

Nocturnal Animals also stars Michael Shannon, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Isla Fisher, Karl Glusman, Armie Hammer, Laura Linney, Andrea Riseborough, and Michael Sheen. The talk of the film festival circuit will premiere in limited release on Nov. 18 before expanding on Nov. 23 and going wide Dec. 9.

But first, get a load of the twisted trailer in the video above.
