The whole intergalactic gang is returning for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, including everyone’s favorite space tree, but Vin Diesel says his Groot will be very different this time around.
While promoting his latest film, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, the actor explained how Baby Groot will be different than the character’s grown-up iteration from the original Guardians.
“He couldn’t be more naive as Baby Groot,” Diesel told Collider. “I always think of the Groot that we saw on the first Guardians as a college-level Groot, so he’s not fully grown yet, but he’s a man. And once he sacrifices himself at the end of the movie, now he has to start all over, so to speak, but we’re gonna see this goofy, adorable, baby Groot thing running around the screen and just learning as he goes.”
Last month, Guardians director James Gunn — who is also directing Vol. 2 — revealed that there’s a secret Groot script for the sequel that only he and Diesel have access to, and it shows what the character really means when he says “I am Groot” or “We are Groot.” When new concept art for the film was released over the summer, Gunn also told fans this tiny-tree version of the character “can be a little oblivious.”
Diesel’s Groot will be back alongside Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, Dave Bautista’s Drax, Karen Gillan’s Nebula, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket Raccoon, and Michael Rooker’s Yondu, plus Kurt Russell joining the cast as Ego. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 arrives in theaters on May 5. Watch Gunn and other members of the cast discuss the film at San Diego Comic-Con in the video above.
