Every week, the cast and crew of NBC’s megastore-comedy, Superstore, are taking EW readers behind the scenes of each episode. This week, Nico Santos, who plays Mateo, takes us through the fourth episode of season 2, “Spokesman Scandal.”
I often get asked which Superstore episode is my favorite. That’s such a hard question to answer. It’s like being asked: Which of your children (and by children, I mean shoes) do you like best? Do you really expect me to choose between a pair of hand-crafted Italian loafers and some fly crackle leather white sneaks? I like them all! This episode, “Spokesman Scandal,” really is one of my faves.
In this episode, we meet Cloud 9’s mascot, Kyle the Cloud, who turns out to be more of a character on Law & Order: SVU than Superstore. The whole mascot-turned-monster drama prompts the return of Jeff, played by the hilarious and aloofingly (is that a word?) charming Michael Bunin. Jeff, as you may recall, left Mateo feeling like a nun in a Rihanna concert: Shocked and a little confused.
Also returning in this episode is Sandra, played by one of my absolute favorite people, Kaliko Kauahi. She and I immediately bonded over our love of song. We are all constantly singing on set, much to the chagrin of our crew members. America and I usually go with musical theater. With Lauren, it’s usually Drake. Kaliko and I tend to serenade anyone who will listen, with an array of artists with distinct voices. Think Anita Baker, Michael McDonald and Cher.

So, we have Sandra and Garrett having to deal with Cheyenne showing them too many baby pictures, or as I like to call it: My Facebook feed. Seriously, when did everyone I know start having kids? You got Dina and Glenn trying to get people to pass a test nobody has studied for, if ya know what I mean (wink wink). Then you got Amy and Jonah continuing their never-ending work-flirt by daring each other with pranks. BTDubs, so glad none of us are pranksters on set…Don’t get any ideas, Ben!
Speaking of work-flirts, Mateo spends the entire episode trying to answer the question: Is Jeff bae? I was constantly breaking during my scenes because Mateo’s ridiculous humbling at every single turn. You almost feel bad for him…almost. Then, just when you least expect it: He asks him out! (YAAAAAASSS!) Oh, but we can’t tell anyone? (BOOOOOO!) So for now, I guess no one can know about Jeteo or Mateff. Meh, we’re still working on the name.
Superstore airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
