Samantha Bee rips GOP leaders for supporting Donald Trump's misogyny
Donald Trump’s latest demeaning comments about women, heard on a recently-released tape of the Republican presidential candidate speaking with Access Hollywood‘s Billy Bush back in 2005, have proved a bridge too far for Republican leaders who had previously supported him through other controversies. This switch did not impress Samantha Bee, however, especially since most of them cited a female relative (mother, daughter, sister) as a reason they couldn’t condone Trump’s comments.
“A whole lot of Republicans were grappling with the discovery that their Muslim-banning, Mexican-insulting, race-baiting, disability-mocking, alt-right-channeling demagogue might not be such a good guy after all,” Bee said. “Oh, go f–k yourself. Trump’s comments are not wrong because you have female relatives. Guess what? A surprising number of Americans have female relatives! Trump’s comments were wrong because women are human. And if you hadn’t stood cravenly by while he insulted them for a year, you wouldn’t be in the pile of elephant s–t you’re in today.”
Bee saved most of her spite for one Republican leader in particular: House Speaker Paul Ryan, who has repeatedly disavowed Trump’s controversial comments over the past year while simultaneously refusing to withdraw political support for the candidate. The closest he came was uninviting Trump to his “fall fest” campaign stop in Wisconsin.
“You’re the last person we wispy little spiderwebs of womanhood would want to champion us,” Bee said. “In the past year, you’ve condemned Trump’s disgusting stance on Muslims, the KKK, Gold Star families, Latino judges, and now women, without ever withdrawing your support for his presidency. You don’t have the courage of a single one of your convictions. But you were smart to disinvite Trump from your ‘fall fest.’ He wouldn’t have been able to resist grabbing a p—y like you.”
