'American Gods' comic adaptation coming in 2017

Fans of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods have been buzzing for a while now about the upcoming Starz TV adaptation of the novel from showrunner Bryan Fuller. As it turns out, that’s not the only American Gods adaptation coming out next year. Dark Horse will also be publishing a graphic novel series based on American Gods, to be written by P. Craig Russell and illustrated by Scott Hampton, with covers by Glenn Fabry and Adam Brown. The cover to the first issue, seen above, depicts the buffalo-headed man who haunts protagonist Shadow Moon throughout the novel.

Russell is no stranger to Gaiman’s work, having illustrated comic adaptations of both Coraline and The Graveyard Book, in addition to drawing the iconic “Ramadan” issue of The Sandman. He will show off those skills on American Gods as well, supplying guest interior art alongside other past Gaiman collaborators and legendary comic creators like Walt Simonson, Mark Buckingham, and Colleen Doran.

“There’s a tremendous amount of excitement, in my house and in the world, about the American Gods TV series coming up on Starz. What we’ve managed to keep a secret until now is that there is something just as exciting out there: American Gods, the comic,” Gaiman said in a statement. “I’ve been watching P. Craig Russell breaking down the book into comic form, watching Scott Hampton painting the pages, watching Glenn Fabry create the covers, and grinning to myself with delight, because the American Gods comic is going to be an astonishing, faithful, and beautiful adaptation.”

The American Gods comic will consist of 27 issues, divided into three story arcs: Shadows, My Ainsel, and The Moment of the Storm. The first issue of American Gods: Shadows will hit stands March 15, 2017, and pick up with the beginning of the story, as Shadow Moon is released from jail and recruited as a bodyguard by the mysterious Mr. Wednesday.
