Step aside, Stephen Strange.

Benedict Cumberbatch shows off some spells and sorcery as the title character in the upcoming Doctor Strange, where he plays a neurosurgeon turned mage who’s tasked with defending Earth from various interdimensional threats, but it turns out the actor’s got some tricks up his sleeve in real life, too.

Not only does Cumberbatch appear on the cover of Vanity Fair’s November issue, but he also took the time to film a quick magic demonstration for the magazine. In just under two minutes, Marvel’s newest superhero waxes philosophic about the many magical qualities of water — all while defying the laws of gravity.

Doctor Strange chronicles the story of the brilliant but arrogant neurosurgeon Stephen Strange, who loses his career when his hands are injured in a tragic car accident. He soon sets out for Nepal in desperate search of a cure, only to learn that his abilities are far more magical than he had ever imagined. Cumberbatch stars alongside Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mads Mikkelsen. Scott Derrickson directed the film, which hits theaters on Nov. 4.
