When Vice President Joe Biden stopped by The Tonight Show on Thursday night, host Jimmy Fallon naturally asked him some questions about the ongoing presidential election and the first debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Biden, in turn, revealed the thing that’s always shocked him about Trump’s rise.

“I’ve never known a candidate who knows as little about the world as this man does,” Biden said.

As an example, Biden told a story of visiting with the Baltic states presidents recently to assure them that the United States intended to honor their commitment to NATO in the wake of Trump’s comments disparaging the international alliance.

“I don’t think he understands how much damage he does by what he’s already said,” Biden said. “Europe, especially Central and Eastern Europe, is terrified of what Putin may or may not do. There’s hope — he found out Crimea is part of Ukraine. It’s almost like the guy didn’t intend to do this. He thought this was a lark and would maybe go somewhere, and my God, here we go guys.”
