Hayley Atwell may no longer be Peggy Carter, but she’s not shedding her breakout role just yet. On ABC’s legal drama Conviction, Atwell has to lead an ensemble cast and used her experience on Marvel’s Agent Carter to figure out how.

“Obviously, Peggy has been a huge part of my life and is still a huge part of my life,” Atwell says. “She gave me an American fanbase, an American audience, and paved the way for me to play Hayes… I felt that I built up the stamina from Peggy to know what leading a show meant. I’m now a little more used to it. It was kind of a vacuum in a fire doing Agent Carter, ’cause I had never had so much responsibility for that length of time, so I’m glad I’ve had the run up with that.”

Atwell laughs and adds, “I’m a little bit calmer on this one.”

Of course, being the star of the show isn’t the only part of Agent Carter that remains with Atwell. “I’m very fortunate in that I still have the best bits of that experience,” she says. “I’m still in contact with the poeple I worked with. I’m in a group chat with the producers, the writers, and James D’Arcy and Dominic Cooper. We all just chat constantly, which is lovely, because that’s what the whole show ended up being for us, just a lot of people wanting to work together and getting the chance to do that.”

Now, how do we get in on that group chat?

Conviction premieres Monday, Oct. 3, at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
