Angelina Jolie has a new movie role in her sights. The actress and filmmaker is in talks to star in Shoot Like a Girl, an adaptation of Air Force Maj. Mary Jennings Hegar’s upcoming memoir, EW has confirmed.
The TriStar film will chronicle Hegar’s accomplishments both on the battlefield, where she served three tours of duty in Afghanistan as an elite rescue pilot and earned a Purple Heart, and at home, where she helped end the Pentagon’s ban on women serving in direct combat jobs.
The current draft of the script is written by Frank Baldwin, and the Gotham Group is producing. A director has yet to be named.
Jolie was last seen on screen in the romantic drama By the Sea, which she wrote and directed, and in Disney’s revisionist fairy tale Maleficent. She is also attached to a Maleficent sequel.
Hegar’s book — the full title of which is Shoot Like a Girl: One Woman’s Dramatic Fight in Afghanistan and on the Home Front — is slated for publication by Berkley Caliber in the spring.
Deadline first reported Jolie’s talks.
