It’s out with the old and in with the new in the Weeknd’s video for new single, “Starboy.”

The dark and dramatic clip, directed by Grant Singer (“Can’t Feel My Face,” “Tell Your Friends”), begins with the singer tied to a chair and suffocating thanks to a plastic bag on his head. It’s later revealed that he’s being held captive and killed by none other than himself — albeit a more up-to-date-version of himself, complete with a leather jacket, diamond cross necklace, and shorter hair.

The symbolism continues as he proceeds to enter the office of his record label and smash up old framed records, album art, and trophies from his past with an illuminated red cross in a bid, it seems, to leave behind his old style and sound. He then triumphantly dances on the glass and destruction and sets fire to his closet, all before driving off with a black panther at the end.

The Weeknd debuted “Starboy,” featuring Daft Punk, last week and also shared the official album cover for the upcoming record, revealing its Nov. 14 release date. The Canadian singer will perform as the musical guest on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live Oct. 1 alongside host Margot Robbie.
