Rob Lowe joins season 2 of CBS’ Code Black as a spitfire doctor with a military background.

“It’s not uncommon for people in the elite military medical trauma units to be repositioned in some of the big hospitals,” Lowe tells EW of his role. “That’s what my character does.”

Even though he’s new to the block, Lowe’s Col. Ethan Willis soon finds a partner in crime in Marcia Gay Harden’s Dr. Leanne Rorish.

“They’re both rogue,” Harden says. “They both are risk takers so they’re both probably slightly reckless. So when we meet it’s a meeting of behavior, of the minds, of attitudes, of skill. So they get along really great actually.”

With a new character also comes a new direction for Code Black‘s second season. “The trend is to get the emergency room to the patients,” Lowe explains.

Fans can expect to see some beach rescues and shark attacks in the season opening. Despite all the added excitement, Lowe praises Code Black‘s dedication to keeping the stories as true to life as possible. He says, “What’s great about the show is that it’s completely grounded in reality.”
