The handshake: Trump and Clinton's stiff greeting
Bill and Melania were pretty tense too
It’s the handshake that world has been waiting to see: Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton locked hands and managed to smile at their first of three planned presidential debates Monday night.
The two candidates met for the 90-minute face-off at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York that’s expected to potentially rank as the most-watched presidential debate of all time (more on that here).
Clinton could be overheard saying, “Hello Donald!” The handshake, of course, is the presidential debate equivalent of touching gloves in boxing, or bowing in karate — the pre-fight moment when two debate opponents cross the stage and have a friendly handshake, smile, and exchange of unheard pleasantries. Except these two, best that everybody can tell, don’t like each other to a degree that transcends typical politics. Clinton and Trump kept it together long enough to get through this moment of decorum that is unlikely to fool anybody.
