Nirvana baby recreates Nevermind album cover 25 years later
You may not recognize the name Spencer Elden, but you probably know his nickname: Nirvana baby. As an infant, the 25-year-old appeared on the cover of Nirvana‘s Nevermind album, and he recently recreated the iconic image to mark its 25th anniversary.
Los Angeles-based photographer John Chappie snapped the shot, which sees Elden — now with flowing hair — floating underwater in a pool. “I said to the photographer, ‘Let’s do it naked.’ But he thought that would be weird, so I wore my swim shorts,” Elden told the New York Post.

This isn’t the first time Elden decided to recreate the album cover. In 2008, he posed in a similar fashion as a 17-year-old.
The cover image came about after Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain saw a documentary about underwater births and “thought the image would make a cool cover,” Geffen Records art director Robert Fisher told EW in a 1992 interview. “That vision was a bit too graphic, so we went with the swimming baby instead.”
“The anniversary means something to me,” Elden told The Post. “It’s strange that I did this for five minutes when I was four months old and it became this really iconic image.” He added, “It’s cool but weird to be part of something so important that I don’t even remember.”
