With only two seasons left in the life of Game of Thrones, would the producers ever consider making a prequel?

Following Game of Thronesbig win for outstanding drama series at the 2016 Emmys, executive producer David Benioff addressed the question head-on: “You might want to ask George about that,” said Benioff to reporters backstage, referring to author George R.R. Martin. “It’s a great world that George created. I think it’s a very rich world, and I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros, but for us, this is it. That’s really a question for George.”

Martin then stepped up to give hope to Game of Thrones fans: “Well, I do have thousands of pages of fake history — everything that led up to Game of Thrones — so there’s a wealth of material there, and I’m still writing more.”

Unfortunately, much like the long wait for winter — and the even longer wait for the sixth book in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series — don’t expect a prequel anytime soon. “At the moment, we still have this show to finish, and I still have two books to finish, so that’s all speculation,” Martin said.

Fans also are waiting for Game of Thrones‘ seventh season, which is slated to debut next summer.

Thrones was a big winner at the Emmys on Sunday night, taking 12 total trophies including three during the ceremony. (Thrones won nine awards at last week’s Creative Arts Emmys.) The wins gave the HBO series 38 overall, making it the most decorated primetime series in Emmys history.
