When former President Bill Clinton showed up on The Daily Show Thursday night, the first thing Trevor Noah asked him was the same thing Americans have been wondering since news of Hillary Clinton’s pneumonia diagnosis emerged after she became “overheated” at the Sep. 11 anniversary ceremony: Is she okay? Her husband, however, could not have been more chill about the situation.
“Big deal, she had pneumonia, people get it all the time,” Clinton said. “You’re always concerned, but I was pretty sure I knew what it was. She had been working hard, she was dehydrated, she’d been standing up a long time there. She wanted to go to that 9/11 ceremony, and we both thought it would be OK. But it’s not surprising… It happens a lot to me. 90 percent of the time, it’s just people are dehydrated. So I didn’t worry too much about it, and sure enough, she got examined and that’s what the doctor said.”
Later in the interview, Noah asked Clinton about the hateful rhetoric of the 2016 campaign. Clinton reflected on how things have changed since his heyday.
“For most of my life, each political party had a 40 percent base, and then there were 20 percent that were generally up for grabs,” Clinton said. “But by the time the 2000 election came along between Al Gore and President George W. Bush, it was probably down to 10. It may be down to less now, because we’re getting siloed. We’re siloed in the TV we watch, the websites we scan, everything. America’s come so far — we’re less racist, sexist, homophobic. We have one remaining bigotry: We don’t want to be around anybody who disagrees with us. The crowd’s laughing, but they didn’t laugh loud because they know I’m telling the truth.”
Noah concluded the interview by giving Clinton something he loves: balloons.
